Using the best cocktail shaker

Do you know what cocktail shakers actually do? Aside from making you look super cool, that is.

The primary purpose of a cocktail shaker is to mix the ingredients of a cocktail while also chilling them. Adding ice to a drink will also chill it, but it dilutes it in the process. Shakers allow you to mix and chill your cocktail without diluting it with melted ice, making it a must-have tool for your home bar.

If you’re looking to invest in a cocktail shaker of your own, keep reading. I’ve researched and reviewed a wide range of cocktail shakers and listed my top 5 favorite options, along with some advice I’ve learned to help you chose the best one for you.

Reviewing the Top Cocktail Shakers of 2025

Simple Modern Cocktail Shaker

Best Overall

This Simple Modern Cocktail Shaker is my best overall pick for one main reason: the double-walled, insulated design means NO! COLD! HANDS! Unlike other cocktail shakers that get freezing cold whenever you use them, this one keeps the cold in the shaker so the outside stays close to room temperature.

While the insulated design is by far my favorite feature of this cocktail shaker, and what makes it truly stand out in the market, it doesn’t fall short in other categories. The lid doesn’t leak and functions as a jigger, allowing you to measure out the perfect shot.

In addition to unmatched functionality, the Simple Modern Shaker also sports 13 different colors so you’re sure to find one that matches your existing bar cart aesthetic.

Whether you’re perfecting your cocktail-making skills or looking for a classy gift for a cocktail enthusiast, the Simple Modern Cocktail Shaker Set is a premium choice to consider. It goes beyond shaking and mixing to offer an enjoyable and frostbite-free experience in creating your favorite cocktails.

Product Pros
  • Durable and high-quality construction
  • Variety of colors and designs
  • Double-wall insulation prevents cold hands
Product Cons
  • It’s best to hand wash this if you want to keep the color

Etens Cocktail Shaker

Budget Pick

If you’re not ready to drop a ton of money on a cocktail shaker, then I recommend this Etens Bar Cocktail Shaker because it’s less than $10 (at the time of writing this). I also like that it has a generous 24 oz capacity so you can easily make 2-3 drinks at a time which is a great feature for when you’re making drinks for multiple people.

Constructed from robust stainless steel, the shaker stands up to regular use without compromising its chic aesthetic (it will collect fingerprints though). The built-in strainer is sturdy and effective at straining out ice or any other muddled ingredients.

It’s easy to dissemble and dishwasher friendly, making it easy to clean and get ready for you’re next cocktail party. There’s nothing too fancy about the design but it’s sleek and neutral enough to match pretty much any existing bar cart decor making it a safe buy.

Product Pros
  • Affordable
  • Dishwasher safe
  • 24-ounce capacity makes multiple drinks
Product Cons
  • Top cap can get stuck

HIC Penguin Cocktail Shaker

Cute Penguin Design

HIC’s Penguin Cocktail Shaker makes an adorable addition any home bar. Its high-polish mirror finish and cute penguin shape make it stand out in a sea of cocktail shakers that all look the same.

It has an 18-ounce capacity that’s able to make 1-2 drinks per batch even though it’s slightly smaller than the other options on this list. It’s also dishwasher safe which is always a plus if you hate doing dishes like I do.

This three-piece set not only complements other quirky bar accessories but also makes for a fantastic gift for mixologists (especially if they like penguins).

Product Pros
  • Unique and adorable design
  • High quality and durable build
  • Does not leak when shaken
Product Cons
  • Smaller than the average shaker
  • Gets extremely cold when in use

OXO Steel Single Wall Cocktail Shaker

Most Durable Design

The OXO Steel Single Wall Cocktail Shaker is great for cocktail enthusiasts who appreciate a sleek yet functional tool. Its all-in-one design assures an easy, fuss-free experience, and it’s perfect for ensuring consistent proportions in cocktail mixing.

It has two silicone gaskets so it’s guaranteed not to leak while you’re shaking or pouring. The lid also functions as a measuring jigger so you don’t have to worry about finding a separate one.

It has a 24-ounce capacity that can easily make 2-3 drinks per batch. The only downside is it’s around $20 so it’s nearly twice the price of some of the cheaper options on this list. I think it’s sturdy construction and thoughtful design more than makes it worth it though, if you want a cocktail shaker that will last you for years to come.

Product Pros
  • Multifunctional jigger cap
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Durable and leak-proof
Product Cons
  • Must thoroughly dry after washing

The beautiful design of this 17 ounce cocktail shaker is both functional and visually appealing, making it a stylish addition to any home bar, especially if you are going for a vintage look.

The base is made of lead-free crystal (fancy), and the lid is made of sturdy stainless steel. It also carries with it the prestige of the Godinger, brand which has been making handcrafted silver, pewter, crystal, stainless, and alternative metal giftware since 1973.

So, whether you’re shaking up a classic Martini or trying out a new cocktail recipe, the Godinger Cocktail Shaker proves to be an essential tool that every at-home bartender should own.

Product Pros
  • Aesthetic and classy appeal
  • Easy to clean and maintain

True Maraca Cocktail Shaker

Best for Beginners

I recommend the True Maraca Cocktail Shaker for novice bartenders thanks to its user-friendly design and built-in strainer.

This 16 oz plastic shaker is pre-printed with seven popular cocktail recipes and ounce measurements. It simplifies the process of creating a variety of classic cocktails, and its built-in strainer ensures a smooth, pulp-free pour every time. The pre-printed measurements eliminate the need for guesswork, making cocktail creation an engaging, fail-safe process.

Additionally, it includes a cap to prevent spills while shaking, making mixing mess-free and straightforward. One downside is that it’s made of plastic which can stain if you are mixing up highly pigmented juices. The 16-ounce capacity also doesn’t support making multiple drinks at once, so this is better for solo use.

Product Pros
  • Leak-proof design
  • Lightweight yet durable
  • Mix drink recipes included
Product Cons
  • Plastic material can stain

How to Find the Right Cocktail Shaker for You

When choosing a cocktail shaker, I consider many different product features. This buyer’s guide will provide a detailed overview of these key features, such as material quality, design, capacity, price, and ergonomics, to help you select the ideal cocktail shaker.

Material

When it comes to cocktail shakers, the quality of the materials is an essential factor to consider. Cocktail shakers should ideally have stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant metals to ensure durability and food safety. Some may contain plastic components, so it’s important to check what type of plastic they have — some are not dishwasher-safe.

Ultimately, the choice of material for a cocktail shaker depends on personal preference, budget, and intended use. Professional bartenders often prefer stainless steel or Boston shakers for their durability and performance, while home bartenders might opt for glass or plastic shakers for their affordability and ease of use. Here are some commonly used materials:

Stainless Steel

  • Pros: Stainless steel shakers are durable, resistant to rust and corrosion, and have good temperature retention properties. They also look sleek and professional.
  • Cons: Some stainless steel shakers may be prone to dents if mishandled. They can also be more expensive than shakers made from other materials.

Glass

  • Pros: Glass shakers are transparent, allowing you to see the ingredients as you mix them. They are also non-reactive, meaning they won’t affect the taste of the cocktail. Glass shakers are often dishwasher safe.
  • Cons: Glass shakers are more fragile than stainless steel or plastic ones and can break if dropped. They also don’t retain temperature as well as metal shakers.

Plastic

  • Pros: Plastic shakers are lightweight, inexpensive, and less prone to denting or breaking compared to glass or metal shakers. They are also often dishwasher safe.
  • Cons: Plastic shakers may not have the same level of durability as stainless steel shakers. Over time, they can become scratched or stained, which may affect their appearance.

Copper

  • Pros: Copper shakers have excellent thermal conductivity, which means they can quickly chill cocktails. They also have an attractive appearance and can impart a slight metallic taste to cocktails, which some people enjoy.
  • Cons: Copper shakers are typically more expensive than stainless steel ones. They also require more maintenance to keep them looking shiny, as they can tarnish over time.

Tin or Boston Shakers (Stainless Steel and Glass):

  • Pros: Boston shakers typically consist of a metal tin and a mixing glass. They offer the benefits of both stainless steel and glass materials. The metal tin provides durability and temperature retention, while the glass allows for easy visibility of ingredients and precise measurement markings.
  • Cons: Boston shakers require a separate mixing glass, which means they take up more space and can be more prone to breakage if mishandled.

Design

The cocktail shaker’s design should be stylish and aesthetically pleasing while still being durable enough to handle regular use. I make sure to pay attention to the details: Are the edges rounded off smoothly? Is the base wide enough for stability? Is there a strainer built in? Or will you have to buy a cocktail strainer separately.

Capacity

Pay attention to the cocktail shaker’s capacity to select one that meets your needs. For home use, where you will likely only prepare one drink or a few at a time, 16 to 24 ounces is typically ideal. If you plan on making larger amounts, consider a larger 30 to 40-ounce model instead.

Price

The price of cocktail shakers can vary widely. Depending on the materials and brand name, prices can range from as low as $10 to $20 up to $100 or more. It’s important to choose a model that fits within your budget while providing good value in terms of durability and quality.

Weight

Pay attention to how much the cocktail shaker weighs to determine how comfortable it will be to use over an extended period. Lighter weights of 8 to 10 ounces tend to be ideal for most single-drink preparations and still maintain their sturdy construction. Heavier models of 12 to 15 ounces may be sturdier but more difficult to lift and maneuver without spilling ingredients.

Ease of Use and Cleaning

Consider how user-friendly any given shaker model is before making a purchase. Shaker styles should include airtight seals so ingredients don’t leak during shaking or pouring. Also, regular cleaning should be easy. Many models are dishwasher-safe or include removable components that you can wash by hand separately in soapy water.

Airtight Seal

A good quality cocktail shaker should have an airtight seal so that ingredients don’t leak while you shake or pour. Many models come with built-in or lid strainers that allow you to strain any solids before serving your drinks without spilling liquid everywhere.

People Also Asked

What type of cocktail shaker should I purchase?

The type of shaker that you should purchase depends on what kind of cocktails you will make. However, the most common shaker is a three-piece (or cobbler) shaker. These allow for straining and shaking and are often less expensive than others. If you want a more professional or higher-end option, check out Boston shakers.

How do I properly use a cocktail shaker?

Using a cocktail shaker is quite simple. Start by filling the larger bottom half with ice, then add your ingredients to the top half. Secure the two halves together by either gently tapping them together or using the base and lid if it includes one. Finally, give the whole thing a good shake for 10-15 seconds (depending on the mix of ingredients), and strain the contents into a glass before serving.

How long does it take to shake a cocktail?

This depends on the complexity of the cocktail and your arm strength, but generally, it should take anywhere from 10 to 15 seconds to properly shake a cocktail. You should shake strongly and confidently until you feel that all ingredients have properly combined and all ice has broken up.

What is the best way to clean a cocktail shaker?

The best way to clean your cocktail shaker is to use hot water, dish soap, and a bottle brush or kitchen scrubber. Fill the shaker with warm soapy water and use the cleaning brush or scrubber to remove any residue from the inside. Rinse it thoroughly. Allow time for air drying before storing it.

How many drinks can I make with one cocktail shaker?

Depending on the size of your shaker, you should be able to make between one to three drinks in one go. However, since there is no exact science when making cocktails, it is always best to play it safe and measure how much is necessary for each drink before shaking.

Are there any tips for shaking cocktails more quickly?

Yes! One way to speed up the process when shaking cocktails is to fill both halves of your shaker closer to halfway rather than full. This will help keep your hands closer together when shaking, which in turn can help reduce strain and fatigue in your arms while also decreasing overall shaking time. Additionally, some bartenders like to hold onto an ice cube or two while shaking. This can help cool down your hands faster and can potentially lead to faster results when shaking large batches of drinks.

Are there specific types of cocktails that require a shaker?

Yes, certain types of cocktails require a shaker to make them properly, specifically those with crushed ice or other ingredients that need to be mixed quickly during preparation. Examples include classics, such as margaritas and mojitos, and modern favorites like gin fizzes.

Is it important to chill the shaker before use?

Yes — chilling your shaker prior to use can help ensure that your drinks remain cold while preparing them! To properly chill your shaker, simply fill both ends with ice cubes and give it a few minutes before starting your drink preparation.

Are there other accessories I need in order to properly make cocktails with a shaker?

Aside from having a quality shaker, there are some additional accessories recommended for making perfect drinks every time. A jigger (or measured pouring cup) ensures accuracy when measuring all ingredients prior to mixing. Hawthorne strainers or julep strainers can make sure no unwanted bits end up in finished drinks. Lastly, ice tongs make handling larger batches of ice easier.
